LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo.—The City of Lee’s Summit has officially opened its newest public safety facility: the South Police Substation, located at 3650 SW Windemere Drive. The project, which repurposed the former Fire Station No. 5, was completed in late summer 2025 and marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 21.

This forward-thinking initiative was designed to enhance public safety and strengthen community connection in the rapidly expanding southern region of the city. By transforming an existing structure, the city demonstrated its commitment to sustainability, resourcefulness and proactive planning for future needs.

The substation was designed by Kansas City-based architecture firm Hoefer Welker, whose renovation tailored the facility to meet modern policing requirements. The updated space includes a fitness center to support officer wellness, a break room for shift balance, and open office areas that foster collaboration and operational efficiency. Secure lockers were added for personal and professional gear, while a designated interview room provides a private setting for sensitive interactions.

A spacious community room was also incorporated to host meetings, training sessions, and public engagement events—reinforcing the department’s mission to build trust and transparency with residents. The former apparatus bays were cleverly enclosed to create the large, open office space needed for expanding capabilities.

Construction was led by Kelly Construction Group. The completed substation now serves as a model for future civic projects that prioritize sustainability and community-centered design.

City officials say the new facility is already improving response times and providing a more visible police presence in the southern part of Lee’s Summit. The August ribbon-cutting ceremony featured remarks from city leaders, guided tours, and opportunities for residents to meet the officers who now serve their neighborhoods from the new location.

The Lee’s Summit South Police Substation stands as a testament to thoughtful growth, strategic investment, and the city’s dedication to public safety and community engagement.
