BREVARD, N.C.—Axias is supporting Sizemore Group in the design of a new courthouse for Transylvania County in Brevard, providing construction cost estimating and cost management services as the County advances one of its most significant capital investments.
The project represents the next chapter in a courthouse story stretching back more than a century. Transylvania County’s existing courthouse dates to 1881 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. While the historic courthouse remains an important civic landmark, the County has studied options for addressing its long-term judicial space needs for nearly two decades.
The new courthouse is being designed adjacent to the County’s Public Safety Facility, bringing judicial and public safety functions together on a county-owned campus. The approximately 65,700-square-foot facility is planned to provide four courtrooms and dedicated circulation for the public, court officials, and detainees, while incorporating flexibility for future expansion as the County’s needs evolve. The design draws inspiration from the community’s historic courthouse, using traditional materials and civic architectural elements, while meeting contemporary requirements for security, accessibility, technology, and court operations.
As Sizemore Group’s cost estimating consultant, Axias has provided estimates throughout planning and design, helping the project team evaluate alternatives, understand the cost implications of design decisions, and maintain alignment between the County’s program and available budget.
The assignment builds on Axias’ established relationship with Transylvania County. Their team previously completed a countywide facility condition assessment of County facilities, including its existing historic courthouse, and has also supported facility planning for Transylvania County Schools. That familiarity with the County’s facilities, priorities, and long-term capital needs provides valuable context as Axias supports the development of this major new civic facility.
As the courthouse moves toward construction, Axias continues to support Sizemore Group and Transylvania County with objective cost information to help transform a long-discussed community need into a practical, financially responsible facility designed to serve the County for decades to come.
