HUNTSVILLE, Texas—The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has officially opened its new statewide training campus following a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Serving as the agency’s first significant new build in thirty years, the roughly 64,000-square-foot complex is designed to modernize professional development and training for personnel across the Lone Star State. Vaughn Construction managed the physical build as the construction manager-at-risk, successfully wrapping up the project thirty days ahead of schedule through proactive planning and consistent schedule oversight.
Spanning three distinct buildings, the campus layout was tailored to support comprehensive operational readiness and staff instruction. The main training center spans approximately 43,000 square feet, providing versatile spaces equipped for modern educational needs, including innovative technology capabilities such as virtual reality integration, recording spaces, and broadcast-ready meeting areas. To accommodate recruits and staff traveling from remote facilities, the site features an 80-bed barracks building spanning roughly 11,500 square feet of residential quarters. Additionally, a specialized indoor firing range encompasses approximately 9,500 square feet, configured with six lanes and a 50-yard depth to support tactical firearms qualifications.
Unlike standard detention infrastructure, the campus required a specialized architectural approach focused heavily on flexibility and adaptability. The agency’s in-house Facilities Division engineering and architecture teams coordinated extensively across internal divisions to integrate multi-purpose spaces that reflect modern corrections standards. By blending specialized spatial planning with advanced technological infrastructure, the facility provides a centralized hub where staff from all over the state can enhance their skills and alignment with long-term agency goals. The successful completion of this campus marks a milestone in modernizing state correctional resources while supporting public safety objectives.
