WESTMINSTER, Colo.—Major changes are visibly transforming the civic landscape as construction on the brand-new Municipal Courthouse project charges forward. While recent activity has focused on early October environmental abatement and upcoming deconstruction work at the City’s former library site, the broader narrative is a sweeping modernization effort. Designed by Anderson Hallas Architects and built by general contractor FCI Constructors, Inc., the $43 million civic facility is taking physical shape directly atop the original parking lot at 3030 Turnpike Drive. This ambitious redevelopment is marching toward an opening in early 2027, promising a state-of-the-art facility for the community.
The project addresses decades of operational challenges at the current courthouse, which has stood for over 60 years. Originally constructed as two smaller buildings serving as City Hall and the police station, the structures were awkwardly merged through multiple additions over the decades. Because it was never purpose-built as a judicial facility, the existing courthouse lacks standard safety and security features, and accessibility remains inadequate since most parts predate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
To solve this, the City worked closely with community members to design a campus reflecting local priorities. A brilliant aspect of the strategy is its phased execution: building the new courthouse and a new Community Reach Center on the existing parking lot. This allowed the legacy courthouse to remain fully operational throughout construction.
While the $43 million facility rises, adjacent preparatory milestones are unfolding. Environmental abatement work at the former library—operated by the Community Reach Center from 2004 until 2024—began in early October, with deconstruction slated for later this year.
Officials emphasize that the existing courthouse remains open, though visitors must navigate temporary adjustments. The main entrance path is accessible from the south side off 76th Avenue. Visitors should enter the parking lot from the west and proceed to the east end. With limited parking, guests are encouraged to follow posted signage and plan for extra arrival time.
Meanwhile, construction led by FCI Constructors, Inc. is making massive strides. The exterior is nearly complete, while the interior is quickly taking shape with active work spanning courtroom construction, sidewalks, utilities, and landscaping.
The new building remains firmly on schedule to begin operating in early 2027. When completed, the campus will feature a secure, fully ADA-compliant courthouse, a new Community Reach Center building, and a brand-new park and playground for the community.
