OMAHA, Neb.—McCarthy Building Companies recently celebrated a significant milestone—a steel topping out ceremony—in Omaha with the Douglas County Corrections Center Addition & Renovation.
The innovative facility is designed to nurture mental health care, boosting rehabilitation and reintegration. The addition will connect to the current Corrections Center through corridors on each level; it features a steel structure, precast façade, metal panels, and Exterior Insulation Finishing Systems (EIFS). Interior spaces utilize Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) and drywall, while secure outdoor recreation areas address therapeutic needs. Constructed above the existing gated parking lot, the project minimizes operational disruption.
The project includes a 235,000-square-foot expansion to the existing corrections facility, features two new housing modules with 124 beds, plus a basement shell space for future development. The undertaking is also comprised of minor renovations to the existing facility aiming to improve functionality and security.
HDR is reportedly the design group behind the project and credited with architectural, interior, landscape, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design. Endicott Clay Products is also involved in the undertaking and furnished the brick veneer on the precast portions of the new justice center.
