PHOENIX—DLR Group recently welcomed Principal Mark Ryan, FAIA, as a new member of its Justice+Civic design leadership. Based in Phoenix, Ryan brings a nationally and internationally recognized portfolio and a design philosophy grounded in empathy, wellness, and innovation.
Over the past three decades, Ryan has cultivated a rich portfolio of acclaimed projects that reframe how people work, learn, play, and engage within their communities. His most influential work centers on civic spaces—places designed for public use yet deeply personal in experience. His design leadership shines through in projects like the Victoria Youth Justice Redevelopment in Melbourne, Australia, the Jonathan Delagrave Youth Development and Care Center in Racine, Wis., and the Jasper County Courthouse in Joplin, Mo. Ryan is committed to crafting thoughtful, holistic environments that uphold dignity and compassion for society’s most vulnerable groups.

Beyond his outstanding professional work, Ryan is passionate about education and mentorship. Since 2004, he has taught both graduate and undergraduate design studios and seminars at Arizona State University, and from 2011 to 2014, at the University of Arizona. His commitment to the profession has earned him the AIA Arizona Architects Medal in 2019 and elevation to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in the design category.
“My background has been focused on the exploration of ideas—a responsiveness, and inventiveness, to program and project constraints—as well as rootedness in place and context,” Ryan remarked. “Practicing architecture and teaching for the past two decades have enabled this exploration to extend and permeate through interactions with others.
