BRONX, N.Y. — The New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) have announced the fourth and final Community Design Workshop for the Bronx Borough-Based Jail facility. Scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, 2026, this session marks the conclusion of a collaborative design process aimed at replacing Rikers Island with a modern, borough-based justice system.
Following three previous workshops that gathered local input on the building’s exterior, streetscape, and interior public spaces, the Design-Build team will present the finalized design plans. This meeting is a critical opportunity for residents of Mott Haven and the wider Bronx community to see how their feedback has been integrated into the project’s architecture and public realm.
The proposed facility at 745 East 141st Street is designed to house 1,040 beds and will feature 40,000 square feet of community and commercial space on the ground floor. City officials and the project’s Community Construction Liaison (CCL) will be on-site to answer questions regarding the construction methodology and the project’s timeline as it moves toward its next phase.
