WINFIELD, Kan.—Winfield recently welcomed a brand-new, long-awaited police facility that is the second major phase of Winfield’s Public Safety Facility—completed after the connected Fire/EMS Station phase.

The new facility was designed by Agora Architecture and reportedly built by Dondlinger Construction, based in Wichita, Kan.

Facility details include:

  • 17,000-square-foot facility connected to the Fire-EMS apparatus bays that includes police offices, interview rooms, armory, evidence storage, and a fitness area;
  • A large meeting space for emergency operations, municipal court, and city commission meetings;
  • Historic jail bars and a timeline mural in the lobby pay tribute to Winfield’s past;
  • Shared indoor/outdoor fitness spaces for Fire and Police personnel;
  • Located on the site of the former Winfield Middle School.

The civic center portion also includes a training area for Fire-EMS and Police and serves as a hub for various city functions and volunteer boards.

The building’s public entrance and parking are off 8th Street, and for those in the area it’s worth a visit just to see the thoughtful design and community-focused layout. It even includes a time capsule buried there for future generations to uncover.

As a Civic Center for public use, the newest phase includes a Training and Meeting Center with warming kitchen as well as a separate conference room. The lobby embraces Winfield’s long history by highlighting a timeline mural and historic jail bars uncovered during the renovation of the Fire/EMS station that was formerly home to the City Jail.

The overall design emphasizes safety and efficiency, with ample daylight access for working spaces. Local limestone is worked into both the interior and exterior, staying loyal to the town’s downtown aesthetic. Spacious interior settings are kept open, with interior glazing and strategic openings allowing daylight far into the building. Durable materials were prioritized to ensure the building stays low-maintenance and fresh for years to come.

Indoor/Outdoor Fitness spaces are shared by Fire and Police Station personnel, resulting in a larger area and robust variety of high-quality equipment. Other offerings include separate open office areas for Investigations and Patrol, with collective kitchen and resource spaces; high-density evidence storage; an enclosed sally port; and a temporary holding facility.
