MODESTO, Calif.—The new Stanislaus County Courthouse is slated to finish construction in downtown Modesto in June 2025 at a cost of $351.909 million, according to updated cost data reported by the Modesto Bee.
The building is anticipated to occupy 309,284 square feet of a 3.5-acre city lot bounded by G and H Streets and 9th and 10th Streets in downtown Modesto. Equipped with 27 courtrooms, it will replace the existing Modesto Courthouse, the Hall of Records Building, the Ceres and Turlock Courthouses and a trio of leased facilities.
The new courthouse will improve security by offering enhanced screening, separate hallways for the public, staff and in-custody defendants and properly sized holding areas for in-custody defendants, according to the California Courts/Judicial Branch of California.
Space for two new judgeships will enable the court to offer basic services previously impossible due to space restrictions. These services will include a self-help center; better sized public lobby, service counters, jury assembly room and jury deliberation rooms; rooms for family court mediation and attorney/client interviews; and a children’s waiting room, per the California Courts.
The Judicial Council of California funded the new courthouse via Senate Bill 1407. It’s one of the highest priority trial court capital-outlay projects for the judicial branch.
Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill LLP is the architectural/engineering firm for the project, with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. being the construction manager at risk and Kitchell CEM serving as the construction management agency.
