FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office expansion project in Flagstaff has reached a significant milestone, with construction now moving into its vertical phase. The development marks a major step forward in the county’s effort to modernize critical public‑safety infrastructure and improve operational efficiency within the justice system.
The expansion, delivered through a Design‑Build partnership between Kinney Construction Services (Kinney) and DLR Group, focuses on enhancing the Sheriff’s Office’s capacity to meet growing community needs. The project includes three primary components: a new medical clinic unit, an upgraded intake and release area, and additional shell space for future program growth.
The medical clinic represents the largest portion of the expansion, adding more than 11,600 square feet dedicated to improved screening, treatment, and ongoing care for individuals in custody. County officials have emphasized that expanded medical capabilities are essential for meeting modern correctional standards and ensuring timely, appropriate care for detainees with medical or behavioral‑health needs.
The redesigned intake and release area adds over 4,200 square feet and is intended to streamline the booking process, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance safety for both staff and detainees. Updated layouts and circulation patterns are expected to improve workflow and reduce operational strain during peak periods.
An additional 3,700 square feet of shell space is being constructed to accommodate future expansion, allowing the county to adapt to changing demands without requiring major structural modifications later.
County leaders have framed the project as a long‑term investment in public safety, operational resilience, and humane detention practices. As construction progresses, the expansion is expected to support more efficient service delivery and strengthen the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to respond to the region’s evolving needs.
The project continues to advance on schedule, with further construction updates anticipated as the facility takes shape in the coming months.
