HOUSTON—Harris County, Texas, is laying the foundation for a safer, more connected future with the groundbreaking of its new Sheriff’s Office & Community Center. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Commissioner Adrian Garcia, the Precinct 2 Team, the Harris County Engineering Office, and local leaders recently gathered to celebrate the launch of this forward-thinking civic campus, located on an 11-acre site at 5910 Navigation Boulevard in Houston.
The $157 million development marks a major milestone in modernizing public safety infrastructure while deepening community engagement. Designed by RDLR Architects and built by Vaughn Construction, the facility will consolidate key divisions of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office—including the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Crime Scene Unit, and Property & Evidence operations—into a centralized, efficient hub with improved access to downtown courts.
But this isn’t just a law enforcement upgrade. The project also introduces a vibrant community center that reimagines how public safety and public service can coexist. The 12,000-square-foot center will feature classrooms, flexible gathering spaces, a tech-equipped business center, teaching kitchen, commercial ghost kitchen, and outdoor play and event areas. These amenities aim to empower residents through education, entrepreneurship, and recreation.
The campus includes three primary buildings:
- Investigations Building (90,000 sq ft): Housing investigative officers and administrative functions
- Property & Evidence Building (87,000 sq ft): Featuring secure evidence storage and new CSI lab spaces
- Community Center (12,000 sq ft): Designed for public use and family-friendly programming
A 400-car parking garage will support staff and visitors, while the surrounding landscape transforms the site into a year-round destination. Highlights include a central public plaza, tree-lined promenade, and spaces for outdoor movies, food trucks, and community gatherings.
RDLR’s design emphasizes transparency, inclusion, and sustainability. The buildings’ tilt-up concrete shells are wrapped in a colorful, woven screen element that connects indoor and outdoor spaces while offering shade and privacy. Notably, the complex does not include detention facilities—underscoring its community-first mission.
With construction now underway and completion expected in 2027, the new Harris County Sheriff’s Office & Community Center stands as a bold blueprint for public safety rooted in trust, openness, and shared growth.
