New York City’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) will hold its fourth Community Design Workshop for the Queens Borough‑Based Jail project on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hellen Marshall Cultural Center in Queens Borough Hall.
The session is part of the city’s broader Borough‑Based Jail Program, an initiative aimed at replacing the Rikers Island jail complex with smaller, modern facilities located in each borough. City officials say the program is designed to create safer, more humane jails closer to courts, families, and community services, while incorporating neighborhood input throughout the design process.
Representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ), the Department of Correction (DOC), and the project’s Design‑Build team will present updates on how community feedback from earlier workshops has shaped the evolving design. Attendees will have the opportunity to review refinements, ask questions, and provide additional input before the next phase of planning.
The Queens facility—one of four planned across the city—is expected to include updated security features, improved space for programming and services, and a design intended to integrate more thoughtfully with the surrounding neighborhood.
