CLANTON, Ala.—Chilton County marked a major milestone this week with the grand opening of its new courthouse—a modern, 72,000‑square‑foot civic landmark designed to reshape how the community accesses justice, public services, and county operations. The facility, created by Birchfield Penuel Architects (BPA) and built by Brasfield & Gorrie, represents one of the county’s most significant public investments in decades, combining contemporary design with long‑term strategic planning to support a growing region.

Located along Alabama Highway 145 on a prominent multi‑acre site, the courthouse consolidates courtrooms, administrative offices, licensing services, and support areas into a single, efficient hub. The design emphasizes accessibility and clarity—two qualities long needed in a county where services had previously been spread across aging facilities. BPA describes the building as a “modern, functional and welcoming courthouse” intended not only to meet today’s needs but to anticipate future growth.

The project’s journey from concept to completion has been closely watched across Chilton County. Construction officially began in October 2024 with a ceremonial groundbreaking attended by county officials, architects, and the general contractor. Site work progressed steadily, and by August 1, 2025, the project reached a symbolic milestone: a Topping Out Ceremony, during which the final beam was placed atop the three‑story structure. Workers, architects, and local leaders signed the beam—inscribed with the words “Bright Future”—before it was lifted into place, marking both progress and pride in a project designed to serve generations.

Drone photography released throughout construction showed the courthouse taking shape as a bold civic presence in Clanton. BPA highlighted the evolving structure in a May 2025 project update, noting how the aerial views captured the scale and ambition of the county’s vision.

The courthouse occupies six acres of a larger 13‑acre county‑owned property, with the remaining land reserved for future expansion. This forward‑looking approach reflects Chilton County’s commitment to building infrastructure that can adapt to population growth and evolving public needs. The total project cost—up to $32 million—includes construction of highway access and was funded through a combination of county contributions and bond financing, without additional burden on taxpayers.

Inside, the courthouse features courtroom furnishings, AV systems, lighting, flooring, and interior finishes supplied by a wide network of consultants and vendors. BPA publicly thanked its partners, including MBA Engineers, Ghafari Associates (formerly BBG&S), Caprine Engineering, Gunn & Associates, ENG AV, Sauder Courtroom Furniture, Business Interiors, Office Resources Inc. (ORI), Artizin, Tarkett, Building Plastics, Lighting Solutions Inc., Milliken & Company, and Fravert—firms whose contributions helped shape the building’s functionality and character.

Beyond its physical footprint, the courthouse represents a renewed investment in civic engagement. By centralizing services and improving navigability, the facility aims to make public interaction with county government more intuitive and less time‑consuming. Brasfield & Gorrie emphasized its pride in contributing to a project that strengthens the community it has served for more than 60 years. BPA echoed this sentiment, calling the courthouse a “cornerstone for years to come” and a meaningful investment in the people of Chilton County.
