EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.—Kraus-Anderson has completed a $26.5 million renovation of the Eden Prairie police department located at 8080 Mitchell Road in Eden Prairie, Minn.
Designed by architecture firm BKV Group, the two-story, 120,000-square-foot facility overhaul upgrades critical law enforcement operations while solving decades of spatial constraints at the Eden Prairie City Center campus.
Overcoming Decades of Spatial Constraints
For over 30 years, the Eden Prairie Police Department operated out of the City Center’s lower-level basement. During that span, the department’s force and vehicle fleet nearly doubled, leaving staff and operations severely cramped in a facility that was no longer suited for modern public safety demands.
To address these operational bottlenecks, the city authorized general obligation bonds to fund a comprehensive reorganization of the municipal complex. Managed by general contractor Kraus-Anderson Construction following its selection in late 2023, construction on the project officially kicked off in March 2025.
Key Infrastructure & Design Enhancements
The renovated two-story HQ delivers purpose-built infrastructure designed to streamline law enforcement workflows, enhance safety, and upgrade technology:
- Detention & Processing: Upgraded holding cells, streamlined evidence intake and processing suites, and secured holding zones engineered for modern detention protocols.
- Secured Fleet Garage: A dedicated, roughly 27,000-square-foot underground squad garage that protects high-value fleet vehicles and sensitive onboard equipment from Minnesota’s severe weather elements.
- Controlled Access: A secure sally port featuring controlled entryways, alongside a newly established public safety vehicle access corridor off Technology Drive to optimize emergency response routes and site security.
- MEP & Structural Overhauls: Comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) upgrades integrated throughout the 120,000-square-foot footprint, improving energy efficiency, ventilation, and building resiliency.
- Training & Administrative Spaces: Expanded administrative offices, modern interview rooms, and dedicated staff training facilities.
Comprehensive Campus Reorganization
The scope of work extended beyond the police department, serving as a broader catalyst for spatial efficiency across the entire Eden Prairie City Center:
Civic Function Relocation: Municipal offices and public meeting facilities—including the City Center’s Garden Room—were relocated from the lower level to the main level, improving public access and administrative flow.
Commercial Real Estate Opportunities: By consolidating municipal operations and elevating law enforcement out of the basement, the project frees up approximately 50,000 square feet on the building’s east wing, which the city plans to market for commercial lease.
