PARKER, S.D.—Turner County, South Dakota, has officially begun construction on a new courthouse in Parker, replacing its historic 1902 building that was permanently closed in late 2024 due to severe structural issues, including sinking trusses and mold. The original courthouse was demolished in February 2025 after being deemed unsafe.
The new facility, located at 400 South Main Street—the same site as the original—is designed by Sioux Falls-based firm Architecture Incorporated and constructed by Journey Construction Group. The building will span 32,726 square feet and is estimated to cost $15.5 million. Completion is expected in August 2026.
The courthouse is designed to enhance public access to legal and civic services while memorializing the legacy of the original structure. The two-story building will include modern courtrooms, interview and conference rooms, secure evidence and drug storage, and dedicated public assembly spaces such as a community room and board room. Built with safety, accessibility, and functionality in mind, it will feature a secure elevator core, multiple egress paths, and a fully sprinklered fire protection system.
Special architectural features include a jury break room with an adjoining patio, a skylight-lit corridor, and high-quality interior finishes such as wood veneer ceilings, graphic vinyl wall coverings, and terrazzo flooring. The building is designed to meet ADA and ICC accessibility standards, reflecting Turner County’s commitment to inclusivity, public service, and long-term community growth.
Groundbreaking took place on June 11, 2025, with county officials and judicial leaders marking the occasion. Turner County Commission Chair Jared Hybertson acknowledged the long road to the project’s launch, stating, “Anyone who has been through this process knows how truly difficult it is to make this happen. I’m grateful to those who have worked so hard to get us here.”
First Circuit Presiding Judge Cheryle Gering reflected on the courthouse’s civic significance: “For more than a century, a courthouse has stood on this hill as a reminder to the people of Turner County and the state of South Dakota of their responsibilities as citizens.”
As of October 2025, steel framing is underway, with concrete floor pouring scheduled next. Officials aim to enclose the building before winter to maintain the construction timeline.
With the new courthouse rising on the same historic hilltop, Turner County continues its tradition of justice and community engagement—now with a facility built for the future.
