SANTA FE, N.M.—Local officials and members of the judiciary gathered on April 2, 2026, for a ceremonial groundbreaking at 2551 Camino Entrada, officially marking the beginning of a long-awaited transition for the Santa Fe Magistrate Court. The state’s second-busiest magistrate court is finally moving from its cramped, 24-year-old leased facility on Galisteo Street to a state-of-the-art, $10 million-plus judicial complex in the Valdez Industrial Park.

A Modern Solution for Modern Caseloads

The new facility arrives at a critical time. In fiscal year 2025, the Santa Fe Magistrate Court handled nearly 13,400 cases—roughly 9% of the state’s total magistrate volume. For over two decades, staff and the public have contended with a building plagued by a leaking roof, mold, and significant security flaws.

The new three-story, 48,000-square-foot courthouse, designed by Albuquerque-based NCA Architects, is intended to serve as a “model” for future judicial infrastructure across New Mexico. Unlike the current location, where detainees often share hallways with the public and staff, the new design utilizes a sophisticated tri-separation of circulation. This ensures that judges, the public, and detainees use entirely separate corridors and elevators to move throughout the building.

Features and Infrastructure

The courthouse will house six courtrooms in total, including a “mega-courtroom” featuring 100 public seats to accommodate high-profile trials and large jury pools. To ensure the facility remains viable as Santa Fe grows, one courtroom will be constructed as a “shell” to be fully outfitted as future demand requires.

Key amenities include:

Enhanced Security: Secure sally ports for detainee transport and ballistic-resistant materials integrated into clerk stations and judges’ benches.

Public Access: Parking for 100 vehicles, with dedicated secure lots for jurors and court personnel.

Legal Resources: Expanded meeting rooms for lawyers and clients, addressing a major deficiency of the Galisteo Street site.

The Road Ahead

The project is currently in the general contractor bidding phase, with sealed bids due by May 14, 2026. Once a contractor is selected, construction is expected to move swiftly, with a projected opening date in mid-2027.

By relocating to Camino Entrada, the Magistrate Court will join the Santa Fe Municipal Court on the city’s south side, creating a localized judicial hub and providing the community with a safer, more efficient environment for the administration of justice.
