FAIRFAX, Va.—Dewberry has named longtime company leader David J. Mahoney, PE, as its next chief executive officer, effective April 1, 2026. Mahoney, who will also join the firm’s board of directors, will be based at Dewberry’s national headquarters in Fairfax. He succeeds Donald E. Stone, Jr., who will remain in an advisory capacity through June 30 before retiring.
Executive Chairman Barry K. Dewberry said the company is poised for continued momentum under Mahoney’s leadership. “Dave has the right experience and energy to lead this company, now in its 70th year in business, and into the future. Our growth trajectory continues to be strong, and he has the strength of leadership and respect of our peers to deliver what the clients and communities we serve expect: strong relationships and excellent results.”
Mahoney has been a central figure in expanding Dewberry’s portfolio of large, complex projects and strengthening its risk management capabilities. Most recently, he served as president of Dewberry’s holding company, a role he assumed in 2025. In that position, he oversaw the firm’s alternative project delivery operations and related risk programs, working closely with all business lines and internal support functions. His leadership has shaped many of Dewberry’s largest alternative delivery pursuits, guiding decisions on risk profiles, teaming strategies, project approaches, and negotiations. He has also helped build strategic partnerships with major construction companies across the firm’s core markets.
A key leader of Dewberry’s alternative project delivery practice, Mahoney has delivered more than 175 design‑build projects with a combined construction value exceeding $23 billion. His work has been especially significant for transportation agencies, water utilities, and other major clients.
Since 2017, Mahoney has also led Dewberry’s transportation practice, overseeing more than $25 billion in construction and generating more than $1.5 billion in revenue. His portfolio spans premier transportation agencies nationwide, including departments of transportation in Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, and California; as well as the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Central Florida Expressway Authority, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Earlier in his career, he managed projects ranging from $50 million to $500 million and has been committed to mentoring staff who now lead multibillion‑dollar design‑build and public‑private partnership programs.
Mahoney joined Dewberry in 1986 and has more than 40 years of industry experience. His work has shaped major infrastructure across the Greater Washington, D.C., region, including the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project, multiple phases of the Intercounty Connector (MD 200), the Fairfax County Parkway, and improvements along the Route 28 corridor in Northern Virginia.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from South Dakota State University (1984).
