GEORGETOWN, Del.—After years of planning, collaboration, and construction, the new Sussex County Family Courthouse has officially opened in Georgetown. This $142 million facility marks a major milestone in the state’s commitment to modernizing its judicial infrastructure while prioritizing trauma-informed design for families and children navigating the legal system.
Spanning over 110,000 square feet, the courthouse replaces the aging facility on The Circle and introduces eight state-of-the-art courtrooms, mediation rooms, and offices for the Department of Justice, Office of Defense Services, and Child Support Services. A 420-space structured parking garage ensures accessibility for the public and staff, addressing long-standing logistical challenges in the historic downtown area.
Design Vision: NELSON Worldwide
Leading the architectural vision was NELSON Worldwide, a nationally recognized design firm known for its human-centered approach to civic spaces. Their work on the Sussex County Family Courthouse reflects a deep understanding of trauma-informed principles, incorporating natural light, warm materials, and intuitive layouts to reduce stress and promote dignity. The firm emphasized transparency and openness, with large windows and clear sightlines that foster a sense of safety and trust.
NELSON’s design also pays homage to Georgetown’s historic character, blending contemporary elements with contextual architecture that complements the surrounding town circle. The result is a courthouse that feels both modern and rooted in community heritage.
Planning Expertise: Tevebaugh Architecture
Tevebaugh Architecture, based in Wilmington, Del., played a critical role in the early planning and feasibility phases of the project. With decades of experience in civic and institutional design, Tevebaugh conducted extensive studies to evaluate the county’s needs, including courtroom capacity, security protocols, and public accessibility.
Their recommendations helped shape the final program, ensuring that the courthouse would not only meet current demands but also accommodate future growth. Tevebaugh’s expertise in balancing historical preservation with modern functionality was instrumental in aligning the project with Georgetown’s unique civic identity.
CGL Companies reportedly served as a justice facility consultant on the project.
Construction Leadership: Wohlsen Construction Company
Bringing the vision to life was Wohlsen Construction Company, a regional leader in construction management with a strong portfolio in public sector projects. Wohlsen oversaw both preconstruction and full-scale building operations, coordinating logistics, materials, and labor across a complex multi-phase timeline.
Their team worked closely with state officials and design partners to ensure the project remained on schedule and within budget. Despite challenges posed by supply chain disruptions and evolving safety standards, Wohlsen delivered a facility that meets the highest standards of durability, efficiency, and aesthetic quality.
A Courthouse for the Future
The new Sussex County Family Courthouse is more than a building—it’s a symbol of Delaware’s evolving approach to justice. By integrating trauma-informed design, modern technology, and thoughtful planning, the facility offers a supportive environment for families, legal professionals, and the broader community.
As Sussex County continues to grow, this courthouse stands ready to serve as a cornerstone of civic life, reflecting the values of transparency, compassion, and resilience.
