TAUNTON, Mass.—For the first time in over a century, the Silver City’s first responders are preparing to hang their uniforms in a home built specifically for them. As of mid-March 2026, the Taunton Public Safety Complex at 90 County Street is officially in the “punch list” phase, with a highly anticipated grand opening targeted for around late April.
While a handful of police officers have already begun the logistical dance of moving files and equipment into the new facility, they are currently outnumbered by a small army of contractors. These crews are working around the clock to calibrate high-tech systems and apply the final aesthetic touches to a project that has become a model for municipal efficiency in Massachusetts.
A “NASA-Grade” Nerve Center
Walking through the facility with Police Chief Edward Walsh, the scale of the upgrade becomes immediately apparent. The lobby—a soaring, light-filled space—serves as a monumental front door for a city that has long made do with aging, fragmented departmental offices.
Inside, the amenities are a far cry from the cramped quarters of the past. Highlights include custom-engineered police lockers designed for modern tactical gear and massive, rapid-response fire truck bays featuring high-speed doors that look ready to deploy a fleet at a moment’s notice. However, the crown jewel is undoubtedly the 911 Dispatch Center. With its tiered seating, massive data walls, and ergonomic consoles, the room bears a striking resemblance to a NASA Launch Control Center, providing dispatchers with the literal and figurative “birds-eye view” needed for modern emergency coordination.
The Visionaries Behind the Build
The project’s success is a credit to the partnership between Caolo & Bieniek Architects and CTA Construction Managers.
- The Architect: Based in Chicopee, Caolo & Bieniek has a storied reputation for New England civic architecture. They designed the 62,000-square-foot complex to be both a “fortress” and a “beacon,” utilizing a granite rainscreen façade that provides extreme durability while maintaining a sleek, contemporary profile. Their layout prioritizes “decontamination zones” for firefighters and secure, streamlined sally ports for police—details that prioritize the long-term health and safety of the staff.
- The Builder: CTA Construction Managers, out of Waltham, handled the complex logistics of the multi-building campus. Their expertise in “essential facility” construction—buildings that must remain operational during a natural disaster—was critical. Perhaps most impressively, CTA and the project’s management team are on track to deliver the facility approximately $10 million under its original $77 million budget, a rare feat in the current construction climate.
Looking Toward April
The transition marks the end of an era for the Taunton Police and Fire departments, who have spent years operating out of temporary or severely outdated structures. As the final landscaping goes in and the last of the “NASA-style” monitors are calibrated, the city is preparing for a formal Grand Opening Ceremony.
While the exact date remains under wraps, the message from City Hall is clear: the wait is almost over. Taunton’s finest are finally getting the world-class headquarters they deserve.
